Pet’s Faces Launched A Career For This Graphic Artist

Little faces pop up whenever this graphic artist does her work at home. Most of the time spent at home is used up for work that just seems to lack color. Four canines and four felines watched her from outside her office.

The faces encouraged her to pursue a different career path. She began painting their pictures while she was on her way to Texas to visit her parents. Using colors that fit the animal’s personality, she creates the animal’s portrait.

Her objective in making animal paintings is to capture their essence. I can use different colors to paint the animal and project its personality. It was on a camping trip in Mississippi that she created her first painting, a mixed breed. The red dog never wanted to leave the couple.

It was the color green which she used for her jealous dog’s portrait. Before her, another artist used nontraditional colors to paint animals. In 1984, a cajun artist created a portrait of a blue dog with red eyes, a reminder of his own dog who died in 1980.

It’s hard not to not see the blue dog. There are those who find the blue paintings comical, but the artist actually sees a haunting picture in these paintings. The basis of each comical painting is actually one of deep spiritual connotation. The questions that we have been asking ourselves for a long time are the same questions she asks us now.

She wants the art to be a reflection of the animal’s essence. Bright colors and odd patterns are what she picks out for her portraits. All her animals are rescued, adopted from a shelter or found on the street. She also adopted a dog, the newest in the family, who was wandering from one house to another in the neighborhood.

She began marketing herself a pet portrait painter by going to local vets and leaving fliers. She requests from her clients photos of the animal and also a description of the animal’s personality. The colors she will use are based from her understanding of the animal. There is just something that these portraits give that satisfies customers, said the owner.

The energy she exhibits was caught in the bright yellow hue used in the portrait. A person who owns an art gallery said portraits have more appeal if people know who the subjects are. Appreciation for a portrait does not come from just simply looking at it.
